Scotland's first ever Building Society started life in March 1848 as the Edinburgh Property Investment Company, changing its name to Scottish Building Society in 1929.
Scotland‘s first ever Building Society started life in March 1848 as the Edinburgh Property Investment Company, changing its name to Scottish Building Society in 1929.
Since those early days, there has been a substantial increase in the number of customers and the range of products offered, matching Scotland‘s developing social and economic needs, whilst remaining true to the original tradition of thrift and careful money-management.
Scottish Building Society is committed to remaining an independent mutual building society, run for the benefit of our members. Following a period in which our normal business had been disrupted by speculators who open savings accounts in the hope of receiving windfall conversion benefits, we have taken steps to ensure that the high standard of service expected by our members is no longer compromised.
From 1 February 2000 (the effective date), we are pleased to announce the introduction of a Charitable Assignation Scheme. We believe that this meets the needs of our savers and help to build relationships that will last over many years.
In order to achieve this, new customers opening any savings account through which the holder becomes a member of the Society will be required to sign a declaration agreeing to assign any windfall conversion benefits to which they might become entitled to the Charities Aid Foundation. This agreement will last for the first five years of membership, after which the declaration will cease to have any effect for the member in question.
Mortgage Health Check
Our programme of Mortgage Health Checks is proving very popular with both existing and potential new members of the Society so if you are a member simply keeping in touch or just here for a site visit why not Click Here to e-mail your details or contact your nearest Area Office which you will find under "Contact Us". A comparative mortgage illustration will cost you nothing and could save you a lot.
The Society will once again be exhibiting at this very successful show over the whole weekend of 8 - 9 May.
If you're interested in a self build project for your dream home, thinking of renovating an older property or simply into DIY, this show is well worth a visit. Our experienced Mortgage Advisers will be on hand throughout the weekend to talk about the finance and give you a helping hand to get started.
